New Interview of Rob and David Cronenberg with Fnac Contact (France)

loading loading

David Cronenberg Cosmopolis, the new film by David Cronenberg, was more than likely to be chosen to be part of the 65th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. Its lead actor is Robert Pattinson. An unexpected but promising collaboration, where the Twilight star portrays a multi-millionaire who drives through Manhattan in a high tech limousine , premise of a self-destructive odyssey.

Contact Fnac: What were your motivations by adapting Don DeLillo’s novel?
David Cronenberg: The dialogues. When I read the book, I thought that I would love to hear them coming out of the mouths of excellent actors. And from a cinamatographic point of view, it was a wonderful challenge to shoot in a limousine in motion. I asked my team to watch the films Das Boot and Lebanon, two films shot in secluded places. It’s quite liberating to have a scenic structure as rigorous as it requires rethinking the traditional approach of cinema, not only regarding the movement of the camera but also regarding the choreography of acting.

Contact Fnac: The choice of Robert Pattinson to play Eric Packer surprised the media. Yet it makes sense.
David Cronenberg: Casting is an occult art. This is something enormously important work as a director. You can kill your film, even before the shooting, with a bad casting choice. And yet there are no instructions to guide you. I felt that Robert Pattinson had the required charisma to embody a strangely neurotic , powerful and yet immature man, who evolves in front of us during the odyssey that occurs through the film. Eric is not a lovable character, and I needed an actor who is not afraid of that. But he is also fascinating, hypnotic, and those are qualities that an actor can possess or not. Robert has them.

Fnac Contact: Power, alienation, self-destruction … Would you say that Eric Packer is close to your previous characters?
David Cronenberg: The brilliant and self-destructive characters are my favorites. They give off such an aura, and thir fall is so instructive, if not entertaining. I am perpetually curious, and sometimes shocked, by our attitudes as humans, and by the human condition in general.

Contact Fnac: You used to be snubbed by the Cannes audience, and then you ended up as President of the Jury. What happened?
David Cronenberg: It took some time before the critics and part of the audience understood what I was trying to do. That's why it's important to have a long career, since your previous films highlight the first, and with time, the specter of your work becomes like a little universe that makes sense for everyone : a creative sense of the month.

Robert Pattinson

Contact Fnac: How do you react when you were offered the role of Eric Packer?
Robert Pattinson: I had read the script a year before and I thought I had absolutely no chance of getting a role in the film, not to mention Eric’s part . And when David (Cronenberg) called me, out of the blue , I was more than surprised! It was clearly one of the most exciting and demanding projects that I could have read.

Contact Fnac: You said that your experience on the set was kind of ‘crazy’. What do you mean exactly?
Robert Pattinson: It was just different from anything I have done before. The script included some really unusual stylistic ideas and I think nobody really knew how to approach this type of material. You know, it’s rare to work with a director who allows his movies to evolve this much, organically.

Contact Fnac: Are there any other filmmakers you would like to work with ?
Robert Pattinson: There are too many to mention them all . But there are among them French directors, including Jacques Audiard, for example, who made quite exceptional movies.

Cosmopolis Producer Paulo Branco talks about Cosmopolis, Rob and David Cronenberg

The tv piece starts by describing the movie's story. In it its mentioned that “Robert Pattinson gets away from the teen themes represented by the Twi Saga to be the lead actor of Cosmopolis”.
Then Paulo Branco starts to talk telling that “(Rob) in the beginning refused the role because he had a bit of fear of the challenge imposed by this movie. In this movie he is, from beginning to end, in all photograms (scenes)”
It was Paulo Brancos idea of adapting this book to the cinema and Cronenberg was the 1st director that the producer thought of.
It took me a while to get to him because, although I'd already met him, I didn't know him that well. At first he (Cronenberg) said it was a bit difficult to do it because of other projects he had going. I gave him he book and 24 hours later he phoned me saying “Paulo this is for me! It is the ideal book for me to adapt. Let's do this””
The piece continues by saying that Cosmopolis is one of the movies in competition for the Palm d'Or in Cannes. More then a win, the producer considers that the presence of the movie in Cannes is a showroom for the movie to the world.

Paulo Branco talks about Cosmopolis, Cannes and the Rob going to Portugal

Paulo Branco, Cosmopolis' Producer, talked about the movie, Cannes, and the Portuguese Premiere with Rob, Cronenberg and DeLillo

Interviewer: Paulo, good evening. This is the 11th movie that you produce and has been selected to the competition in Cannes - the most important film festival in Europe. From what we saw in the trailer and from the little we know, this is not an European movie. Is this your most important movie?
Paulo Branco: Well, as a producer I like to think all movies are important, but this one is special, of course. It's a movie where, for the first time, I worked the way they do on the other side of the Atlantic. It was filmed in Toronto with one of the best directors in the world, David Cronenberg, that was kind enough to listen and accept my proposal, and with great Hollywood actors. And it's the first time I work on a movie this big and with this budget.

Interviewer: We're talking about a major production?
PB: We're talking about a medium American production, about 15M Euros. A French-Canadian movie. We had as much support from France as from Canada. Although, it is a budget that indie producers are not used to, especially with the freedom I had to produce this movie: choosing the director, David Cronenberg, and the actors (along with Cronenberg). It was an unique experience. I am proud (for the movie) to be in Cannes now; to be aknowledged. Every movie in Cannes, in competition, they're not just “another movie”. It's always something special, someone who has been and follows the festival, can understand.

I: The cast and crew of this movie is impressive. Famous director, David Cronenberg. The main actors are, I should say, even more famous (Juliette Binoche and Robert Pattinson, from the Twilight Saga). I want to know if there's anything planned for the release of the movie in Portugal in May with them?
PB: Precisely. It was created some sort of empathy with Don de Lillo, David Cronenberg and Robert Pattinson, that since the beginning, when I talked about the idea of doing a small promo tour in Europe to promote the movie, starting in Portugal, they immediately accepted. They'll be here right after Cannes for the Portuguese premiere of the movie. I think it's an unique event, for a movie premiere, in Portugal. And an example of professionalism and devotion from the people that worked in this film. For Pattinson, this project is essential. He watched the movie and personally told me that it was, maybe, the project that he was most proud of and wanted to support it wherever it was necessary. Don DeLillo, one of the biggest writers in the world, when saw the movie... (Interviewer interrupts Paulo Branco)

The last question is hard to understand, Paulo Branco talks about Cannes, promoting and selling movies at the festival.

loading

Translation from Expresso

The director David Cronenberg, writer Don DeLilo and actors Robert Pattinson and Paul Giamatti will come from Cannes to Lisbon, at the end of May for the premiere of the movie "Cosmopolis", Expresso has learned.

Produced by Paulo Branco, the film has been selected for official competition of the Cannes Film Festival, being the 11th film of the Portuguese producer to earn the distinction.

(...)

The Portuguese release date is scheduled for May 31.

Expresso is a reliable Portuguese site/newspaper. Paulo Branco, Cosmopolis' producer, is from Portugal and was responsible for showing the first preview of the movie at the Lisbon and Estoril Festival last year.

The Portugal Premiere makes sense, but we'll update when there's official confirmation.
