Cosmopolis and On The Road 'Strong Contenders' at Cannes

Cineurope recently posted an article speculating about Cannes with a list of films that will likely make it to the festival. 'Cosmopolis' as well as 'On The Road' were included.

"As Berlinale comes to a close, professionals have turned their attention to the 65th Cannes Film Festival, to be held from May 16 to 27, and observers are already speculating about the films that will be selected this year by Thierry Frémaux.

Among those most likely to make it to Cannes are (...) On the Road by Brasilian director Walter Salles, Cosmopolis by Canadian director David Cronenberg."

From another Cineuorpe article:

Cosmopolis' executive producer, Grégoire Melin, says he's "counting on" the film going to Cannes.

"The European Film Market at the 62nd Berlinale was buzzing for Franco-American production The We and the I by Michel Gondry (photo), pre-sold by the Parisian company Kinology. The new film by the director of Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind was filmed last year in New York in the Bronx, and follows high school students on the bus home on the last day of the school year. The film is a sort of study of group dynamics and the evolution of relationships as the bus gradually becomes emptier, and has been acquired in Berlin for several small territories, according to Grégoire Melin, who will unveil footage from the film a few weeks before Cannes, where he will also be counting on Cosmopolis by David Cronenberg (article), already pre-sold practically everywhere in the world."

The Playlist lists 'Cosmopolis' as well as 'On the Road' as 'Strong Contenders'

"Cannes is still a couple of months away so anything can happen, and much can change so this is our more level-headed, buyer-beware cautious entry into the world of speculation that tends to become engulfed in a lot of wishful thinking. All signs point to another strong festival, with a top tier list of filmmakers likely to make the journey.

(...)

Strong Contenders

“Cosmopolis” (dir. David Cronenberg)
Cast: Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Jay Baruchel, Sarah Gadon
Before the end of the year, David Cronenberg told us that he was finishing the sound mix for the film, which means it’s nearing the finish line. Meanwhile, producer Gregoire Melin recently told Cineuropa he is “counting on” the film showing up on the Croisette. Additionally, “Cosmopolis” is a co-production between French and Canadian backers, so we presume we’re looking at Cannes premiere, followed by a TIFF bow before rolling into theaters this fall. Cronenberg is a regular at the festival but hasn’t been there in a decade since “Spider,” so we’re sure they’re going to want him back.

“On The Road” (dir. Walter Salles)

With production on the film beginning way back in August 2010, and additional photography happening last spring, it has been a slow but steady path for this highly anticipated, years in development adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s seminal novel. The director gave fans good news in January when he revealed that editing and mixing on the film was finally finished. And with a May 23rd release already set for France, the film’s appearance at Cannes feels like a fait accompli from our vantage point. "

Hollywood-Elsewhere and AwardsDaily also commented Cineuropa's speculation list.

The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 16th to May 27th.

"On The Road" and "Cosmopolis" possibly at Cannes? by cineurope
As Berlinale comes to a close, professionals have turned their attention to the 65th Cannes Film Festival, to be held from May 16 to 27, and observers are already speculating about the films that will be selected this year by Thierry Frémaux. Among those most likely to make it to Cannes are [...] On the Road by Brasilian director Walter Salles, Cosmopolis by Canadian director David Cronenberg.

Germany: Concorde picks up OTR by chicagotribune
Concorde has been flexing its muscle since its extraordinary success with "The Twilight Saga" while maintaining a distinct profile that includes mainstream [...] as well as international arthouse and specialty titles like [...] Walter Salles' "On the Road".
 (thanks evendia for the heads-up)

Concorde already listed "Unterwegs - On The Road" on their official homepage:

German release date apparently is October 4th, 2012, however, the official German homepage for "On The Road" (still under construction) states "Released in autumn 2012".

Switzerland: No release date for the German speaking part yet
While "On The Road" will be relased on May 23rd, 2012 in the French speaking part (distributed by Filmcoopi), the German speaking part hasn't got a release date, as the distributor wrote in a mail to us.
However, Germany and Switzerland do often share the same release date for most of the films so a release in autumn seems quite possible.

I'll tell you - the cool and crazy things and people I keep finding on my journey! I am one lucky man, and I appreciate it every day."

From twitter:

Update on the film's score
The composer just wrapped scoring “On the Road,” by Walter Salles, based on the Jack Kerouac novel, with a cast that includes Sam Riley, Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart and Viggo Mortensen. “It was challenging because the film reflects the Beat generation, which was inspired by music — there was always music as a background,” said Santaolalla , who has worked closely with Vuitton over the years and in 2008 composed the soundtrack for its TV spots.

Also, be sure to check out this amazing "On The Road" project!

On The Road for Kerouac (OTR4K) - Reinvent the scroll

"This project is a tribute to American author Jack Kerouac for his 90.
It’s an original idea of a French fan of Kerouac, but we hope that the tribute will be spread all over the world!
On The Road 4 Kerouac was born of a double desire: paying a tribute to Jack Kerouac for the 90 years he would been in March 12, 2012 and making this author rediscovered to the public, through the film On The Road for example.

The first form of the project, which is the tribute to Kerouac, comes in the form of a continuous scroll of paper as the original manuscript of On The RoadIt will contain all the tributes / testimonials of those who would have participated. The goal is to reach the same length as the original manuscript, that is to say, about 37 meters!

In the end, the roll will be sent to The Beat Museum in San Francisco, a unique place that brings together everything related to Kerouac and the Beat Generation.

The second form of the project is making Kerouac rediscovered to the public. We are currently asking libraries, concert halls, theaters, if we can display a poster with Jack Kerouac and his work, then leave a box-letter so that people can make a tribute. Partnering with libraries to circulate On the Road books is also under way.

Finally, the project also aims to promote the release of the On The Road movie, a much anticipated event for all avid readers of Kerouac, and which is in itself a great way to introduce the novel to the public.

The project has an international vocation. Indeed, Jack Kerouac is known worldwide, and we hope that a maximum of different countries will participate. The scroll will be written in English and French, both languages spoken by Kerouac."

Go to the site HERE to find out more about the tribute and how you can participate! Plus you can show them your support by following them on Twitter and Facebook :)

Kristen Calls Lu Anne Henderson the "Necessary Estrogen" in 'On The Road'

loading

In his latest book, Gerald Nicosia has unlocked the dynamic of Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady, and not a moment too soon. Nicosia, the author of “Memory Babe,” the definitive Jack Kerouac book, was an advisor to the “On The Road” movie due to be premiered in May at the Cannes Film Festival. “On The Road,” published in 1951, was of course, the book that made Kerouac famous. It was inspired by Jack London’s famed book, “The Road,” published in 1907.

Nicosia’s new book is “One And Only: The Untold Story of On The Road.”
Its genesis was on the set of "On The Road," when he was hired to teach the actors what beatnik life was all about.

“The new film is more from the viewpoint of Lu Anne, Cassady’s first wife. That is because Nicosia as the preeminent Kerouac scholar was hired as an advisor for “On The Road.” When he played the tapes for actress Kristen Stewart, both he and the actress had some major revelations.

Stewart plays Marylou, who was 15 when she met Cassady. Marylou was a sweet 16 when they married, discounted as the stunning 16-year-old blond bimbo who Kerouac and Cassady shared, but otherwise was of little account. “One And Only: The Untold Story of On The Road” strongly disputes that account, and portrays Lu Anne as as the glue that bound these two powerful characters. She molded their relationship, and thus was a major catalyst of American literature…

To be sure, a lot of serendipity was involved in how the story unfolded. Nicosiadecided to play the interview for Stewart during a beat boot camp “On The Road” director Walter Salles set up in Montreal in the summer of 2010. Nicosia had recorded the hours-long interview with Lu Anne in 1978. For Stewart, she was looking for the rhythm of Lu Anne’s language. For Nicosia, he realized that he had not really understood what Lu Anne was saying when he first recorded the interview…”

Rolfe asked Nicosia to try and make of it what he could.

“What we now know is that the dynamic duo of Kerouac and Cassady was actually a trio: Neal, Lu Anne, and Jack,” he replied. ”It was always assumed that these two guys, cultural outlaws, a kind of modern-day Butch Cassady and Sundance Kid, just magically found each other, combined forces, and started the Beat Generation.”

“What we now know, thanks to Lu Anne’s testimony, is that both these guys were enormously insecure and vulnerable, that they were very different (though both were misfits in post-World War II America), and that neither one liked or trusted the other when they met.

“It took the depth and insight of a woman’s love, Lu Anne’s, to allow them to see enough in each other’s character, and in each other’s heart, to begin to form the friendship that changed contemporary AmericaWithout Lu Anne–the “necessary estrogen,” as Kristen Stewart put it–the chemical reaction, the new and potent compound of Kerouac-Cassady, simply wouldn’t have happened or existed.”

More Rumours: "On The Road" & "Cosmopolis" at Cannes Film Festival 2012?

With the board of directors of CFF renewing the mandates of the director and the general manager of the Cannes Film Festival, more rumours come up about "Cosmopolis" and "On The Road" being presented in Cannes next May.

"Even if it's a bit too early to know the progress of the different projects, some titles are already circulating in the press which is specialised on presentations at the Croisette next May.
[...]
As always for the American cinema, they wait for news on "Cosmopolis", the adaption of Don de Lillo's book by David Cronenberg, with Robert Pattinson and Sarah Gadon.
[...]
For the opening film they are placing bets on "Moonrise Kingdom" by Wes Anderson, with Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton, whose French release coincides with the festival's opening day, May 16, or on Walter Salles' new film, "On The Road", adaption of the cult novel by Jack Kerouac."

Viggo Mortesen Mentions Kristen

loading

BuzzSugar: One of your next films coming out is On the Road. How was it filming that movie with Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart, and Tom Sturridge?

Viggo Mortensen: Of the three actors you mention, I only worked with Kristen Stewart, who did a great job with her character from what I could see. Walter Salles, the director, has a light touch and is very kind, extremely intelligent, and very helpful with the actors. Great crew on that shoot. The images I have seen are strikingly beautiful; they really capture post-WW2 USA landscapes, people.

Kristen Featured in ‘One and Only: The Untold Story of On the Road’

Beloved by both Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady, Lu Anne Henderson’s story has never been told.
Lu Anne was a beautiful 15-year-old girl in Denver in 1945 when she met Neal, a fast-talking hurricane of male sexuality and vast promises. The two married, and soon they were hanging out with a group of would-be writers, including Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. But Neal and Jack initially didn’t like each other very much. Lu Anne taught them how to love each other — in effect, making the Beat Generation possible, as well as giving Kerouac material for one of the seminal novels of the 20th century, On the Road. One and Only traces the immense struggles of Lu Anne’s own life, which ranged from the split-up of her family to the ravages of abusive men, lingering illness, and the grief of losing the two most important men in her life.

Lu Anne Henderson did not live to see the filming of On the Road by Walter Salles, but One and Only tells how Twilight’s Kristen Stewart, through her work with both Nicosia and Anne Marie Santos (Lu Anne’s daughter), came to find the key to playing Lu Anne in the film.

Screenplay Writer Jose Rivera Discusses “On The Road” – Release Date Still Pending

Busy recruiting technicians to film “Celestina”, his first feature movie as a movie-maker, the Puerto Rican writer Jose Rivera, nominated to the Best Adapted Screenplay in 2005 for “The Motorcycle Diaries”, will have to wait until December to see what the director Walter Salles has done with his version for the book known as the summary of the beat literature.
A dive in the beat work
“On The Road”, Walter Salles’ adaptation for Jack Kerouac’s novel, was scripted by Rivera, repeating a partnership that began with the young Che Guevara’s biopic movie. The first copy of the movie, starring Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart, will only be finished at the end of the year. Its future in the big screen, which was not yet informed, lies in the hands of the producers – amongst them is Francis Ford Coppola.

- The process of writing “On The Road” was the exercise of creating an intimacy with “$” (this was an error of the original article; I presume it’s Jack Kerouac), his prose, his time and his world. To write the script, I had to dive into the work of his beat generation colleagues and know the politics, the culture, the fashion and the art of that period of time (the 1950s) in which they wrote – says Rivera, in an e-mail interview for O Globo.
Connected to the theater since 1983, when he first produced “The house of Ramon Iglesia”, Rivera brought from his partnership with Salles the elements to pull Celestina’s script out of the paper. With a 2012 release date, the production stars Sona Tatoyan, an American better known for her stage work than her screen one, with whom Rivera shot the short movie “The tape recorder”.
- Before meeting with Walter, I had written scripts, but none got produced. Working with him in “The Motorcycle Diaries”, I learned what I know today about casting, shooting, editing and market rules. And I learned how to be polite in moments of pressure – says Rivera.
In Celestina’s plot, Sona is a young pregnant woman that goes on searching for a family. Bill Pullman, from “Titanic”, will also be in the movie.
- Celestina’s crusade is a reference to our own need to belong to a community – says Rivera, who has incorporated to the script some questions that are inherent to his cultural heritage. – The main male character in Celestina is Anibal, a Puerto Rican who, like me, lives in the US, having built a career there. I speak Spanish. He doesn’t, like many of the Latins who live on the American soil. From that, I want to make this movie a channel to discuss the alienation of identity.

Tom Sturridge recently talked about his forthcoming movie On The Road and now he has praised his On The Road co star, who is none other than his best friend Robert Pattinson’s girlfriend Kristen Stewart. Tom also admitted that it was a joy to work with a familiar face.

Sturridge explained, “It was so terrifying entering into that world and what was great was just having someone that I knew and actually working with her. She's just a f**king extraordinary actress, just really, really extraordinary and it's astonishing just to see her do her job.

He then added, “It was genuinely, one of the deepest working experiences I've ever had. It was extraordinary.” Tom Sturridge can be seen on the big screen alongside Kristen Stewart, as well as Garrett Hedlund, when On The Road is released next year.
