TheMusic.com.au  Kristen Stewart believes that most people’s notion of Snow White is the sweet, demure Disney version of the character (“unless they read a lot of fairy tales as a kid, which I didn’t), and so she admits that she didn’t really see the potential of a new Snow White story when she first heard about the film.

“I didn’t really see why anyone would want to join her cause,” she says. “Back when the Disney version was made, being a caretaker, being delicate and sweet and maternal, was kind of an ultimate goal. But to do the story today, I think she has to do a little more than sweep house. When I read it, I could totally recognise Snow White within this very dark context as someone really, really trying to retain light and not harden.



“Right now, a lot of female characters that are trying to be strong are promoted as ‘Yeah, female empowerment!’ but in this case I’m glad she remained a girl, someone trying to find her strength and her steadiness and her compassion and her trust in herself. You know, we rip her heart out and stomp on it, put it back in her chest and see if it still beats… and it does. So I thought it was really impressive, the darkness and the light of this world.”


It was revealed this week that Stewart topped the Forbes magazine list of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses, her paydays for the last two Twilight Saga movies earning her more than $12 million (and her cut of her profits ramping it up even more). But her tastes seem to be run more towards the independent end of things, with the actress taking on roles in critically-acclaimed films like Adventureland, Into the Wild and The Runaways.
So she was happily surprised when Snow White And The Huntsman offered her the opportunity to delve a little deeper into the creative process than she imagined it would.

West Australian  If you are going to inject a classic fairy tale with contemporary relevance, it helps to have as your leading lady an actress who speaks to her generation.

 Director Rupert Sanders admits that he has seen only the first Twilight film - but he knew when it came to finding a girl who embodied all the qualities of the gutsy heroine at the centre of his first feature film, Snow White and the Huntsman, there could be no one better suited to the role than Kristen Stewart. "She's very contemporary and very spirited," Sanders says of the 22-year-old star who has become a household name playing Bella Swan in the hit vampire film franchise. "She carries a lot of weight on her shoulders and does it with far more years than she has under her belt. There was just something about that spirit that was undefined and raw that drew us to her. It's very unbridled and kind of un-manicured."

 It's the morning after the Australian premiere of Snow White and the Huntsman (or SWATH as the film is known on Twitter), Sanders' ambitious, big-budget adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairytale, featuring a stellar cast including Australian Chris Hemsworth and Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron.

 In the plush confines of Sydney's Park Hyatt Hotel, Sanders is sitting alongside his leading lady whose casual leggings, old grey t-shirt and flannel shirt, belie the fact she has, just that morning, been named by Forbes as the highest-paid actress in Hollywood. "Well, she's worth every penny," he adds, giving the uncomfortable- looking actress a reassuring smile.

IN HER new film, the fantasy epic Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart plays a young princess who escapes deprivation and confinement, survives testing trials and acquits herself as a leader ready to claim what is rightfully hers. The story is derived from a Brothers Grimm fairytale, but it has no shortage of contemporary relevance, especially for the American actress.

''She's been imprisoned by Twilight and this is her breakout,'' says Rupert Sanders, the British director making his first feature with Snow White and the Huntsman. ''Kristen's very talented and she's got a huge career ahead of her where she will constantly surprise people.''

As one of the few successful child actors to transition without a hitch into adult roles, Stewart feels like a familiar screen fixture despite being merely 22 years old. She was just 17 when she was cast as Bella Swan, the chaste teenage girl who falls in love with Robert Pattinson's brooding vampire in 2008's Twilight. That overwrought franchise finally ends this November, and it appears that while she's grateful for the exposure, Stewart is ready for the next phase of her career.

''I'm not trying to distance myself from Twilight, but there are several films coming out this year that are going to compound the sense of change,'' Stewart says. ''I've done things that are far and away from anything I could imagine, and right now I'm bursting with emotions and questions.''

Kristen Stewart may have just been named the highest paid actress in Hollywood - but it appears the Twilight star was the last to know. Stewart, who is in Australia promoting Snow White and the Huntsman, raked in $US34.5 million ($34.2 million) in the past year, helped by her new movie, in which she co-stars with Australian actor Chris Hemsworth.

However, the 22-year-old had no idea about her new title until she was asked by Access All Areas during an interview in Sydney yesterday how she felt about knocking Angelina Jolie off the top of Forbes' list.

"Oh wow," a clearly embarrassed Stewart said, just hours after the news hit the internet. "What are you talking about? I didn't know that."

While her bank balance proves otherwise, sitting alongside SWATH director Rupert Sanders at Sydney's exclusive Park Hyatt hotel yesterday afternoon, Stewart looked like any other 20-something girl, dressed casually in worn-out leggings and a grey flannel shirt.

Even at the Australian premiere of SWATH on Tuesday night, she ditched her Christian Louboutin heels for a pair of comfy Converse sneakers.

"I just don't like teetering over all those young girls," she said. "I want to be able to run around and talk to them. I acknowledge the heels do look better, but that's OK."

So is she uncomfortable with her new title?

"No, I think pressure is kind of a big part of the job and I really appreciate pressure, but it's not really from stuff like that" she said. "Any pressure I feel is self-inflicted."

Stewart was last in Australia to promote the massively successful Twilight. However, she said the reception she received at the SWATH premiere on Tuesday in Bondi, which saw some fans camp out for 48 hours to get a glimpse of the star, was just as emphatic.

"I got really emotional when I got there," she said. "We've got lucky enough to share that energy and that feeling with so many people with Twilight but when I got there for Snow White and saw the same thing it was baffling. It was really cool."

Cameron Diaz, who brought in $US34 million in the past 12 months with films like What to Expect When You're Expecting and Bad Teacher, was second on Forbes' list. Oscar winner Sandra Bullock was third with $US25 million in earnings between May 2011 and May 2012 while Jolie was fourth with $US20 million.

Bel Ami is different from the Twilight movies that made you an international star. Why this movie?
Rob: I forced myself from the beginning to do different movies between each Twilight films because it made me feel better to become a normal guy again with no excessive makeup or contact lenses. That's why I wanted to do Bel Ami. I knew of Maupassant's novel because I love French litterature. The only regret I have is that we filmed in Hungary instead of Paris.

Why didn't you film in France?
Rob: It's very difficult to find the Paris from Guy de Maupassant in the French capital today. Whereas there's hundreds of streets in Budapest that look like Paris from the 19th century. But I hope to film in France soon.

The “Twilight” hype was blessing and curse: It overran Kristen – but has also made her a Hollywood-Pro. Kristen finally controls her game, one month after her 22^nd Birthday. Just even her name will attract millions into the cinemas. And will bring her offers for roles from blockbuster to art house movies. This year Kristen is seen in even three movies: After “Snow White and the Huntsman” the indie movie “On The Road” will release this autumn and the “Twilight” finale. 

“Definitely a big year for me”, Kristen says. She’s ready.

From Twilight to the cinema of David Cronenberg, that's a big step. It is the beginning of a new career for you?
Firstly, to be here with this movie, it's amazing. For a young actor like me, for people who really like cinema, it's the ultimate festival. One of the only ones that considers cinema like an art form. Here it's not about being a celebrity and all that comes with it. To go back on the subject of my career, it's probably the start of something. Because shooting Cosmopolis gave me the confidence I needed to invest myself in projects that really interest me.

You started in England but you became famous because of Hollywood. Do you think young american actors see Cannes like you do?
Maybe ... until the day their movie gets selected *laughs*. In the US, Cannes isn't given a lot of media coverage, we talk about it more in a professional environment. Whereas in London, the festival is on the first page of the newspapers for two weeks. The thing that is weird here is all these people that clap for you at the end of the screening. I went to the one for On the Road (note: wednesday night) and it hit me. In the USA, people leave as soon as the credits roll. I asked david what would happen if we were booed with Cosmopolis. Do we have to stay up for 20 minutes anyway? *laughs*

Apparently, you're a fan of Cronenberg. Did you sign on for one of his movies without reading a script?
Absolutely. I did so last week! My agent asked me if I was reading for the next movie with David and I said yes without thinking *laughs*. For Cosmopolis tho, I read the script one year before it got offered to me and I foudn it excellent. On the first read, I felt a connexion. It talked to me without me even knowing what it was about.

 "These types of situations (referring to the interview) are really the only times that you have to deal with it and it feels really fitting and appropriate and it makes sense," Stewart said of her fame. "It only gets weird when it enters this strange world of suddenly you're interesting beyond your job, and some people buy in to that and think, 'Alright! Cash in! I'm like totally gonna sell myself,' and I don't think they're even aware of what they're doing."

Stewart, who has stated that she never wanted to be the center of attention as a child, added that she thinks its "weird and embarrassing" when celebrities commoditize themselves in an effort to capitalize on their fame. "I think the most interesting thing about me is the fact, right now, that were doing 'Snow White' and we're at this junket," the California native said. "People know my cat's name, which is weird.
